Also known as 'Dali City', Xiaguan is the capital of Dali Prefecture in China's Yunnan Province. It is a last stop for anyone bound for Old Dali. Some tourists mistakenly disembark here, only to find they're in the wrong place.
In the worst case scenario, some tourists even book a hotel here in New Dali and then set out in search of the historic quarter. The official name, 'Xiaguan', has been pushed in recent years in hopes of drawing attention to this important distinction. Outside of transport changes and accidental hotel bookings, there's no cause to linger in Xiaguan.
Those who do find themselves spending more than a few minutes here don't have many sightseeing options at their disposal. A large tea factory is based here and is worth the stop if only for the chance to purchase the product directly from the source. Otherwise, cruises on nearby Lake Erhai are a nice escape.
Xiaguan's airport sits 10 miles outside of town and offers a few daily connections to Kunming (45 minutes). Buses and trains also ply this popular route. To continue on to Dali (30 minutes), board city bus 4 or charter a minivan from the bus station. The latter option is hit or miss, as the vehicle won't depart until full.
