Wudalian Chi Travel Guide

Wudalian Chi is a very remote scenic area of northeastern China. It resides right up in the northwest of Heilongjiang Province and is a bit of a pain to get to, yet has many unique volcanic features.

A scenic area with China's youngest volcanoes, Mount Laohei and Mount Huoshaos.
When to Go
May or October for the calmest weather.
Nearest Town
Qiqiha'er, 200kms to the southwest, although Harbin is the main gateway.

Wudalian Chi has 14 volcanoes, with then newest just 60,000 years old and the oldest two million years.

Wudalian Chi means 'five interconnected lakes' which were created from eruptions 60,000 years ago. There are many exotic shapes and colors here and it has a different look compared with many other renowned volcanic sights in the world.

The scenery in Wudalian Chi is pretty special owing to its relatively recent volcanic activity, coupled with older eruptions. There are many weird peaks, caves, lakes, and hot springs from 14 volcanoes. There are also some good tourist facilities here, with spas, gardens, and festivals.

The most visited volcano in Wudalian Chi is Mount Laohei and the Sea of Stone (Laohei Shan-Shi Hai). It has good hiking. There are also some touristy things to do in Wudalian Chi, including visiting the Zhongling Temple, checking out China's biggest mineral water recuperating center, and partaking in the annual Water Drinking Festival in May.

Travel to Wudalian Chi - Getting There

Wudalian Chi is best accessed by tour bus from Harbin, the Heilongjiang capital in the south of the province. Buses also run to the scenic area from the long-distance bus station in Harbin in 5 hours. Harbin Airport is the gateway airport with flights from all over China, Asia, and even from Los Angeles. Flight time is 2 hours from Beijing.
