There’s a lot of nice places and a lot of overrated places along the sloping coast of south-eastern Thailand. Pattaya can be paradise or hell, depending on your tastes, but Rayong and Sattahip are quite nice little towns. Once you get offshore, though, things markedly improve, with the always crowded Ko Samet, the large and lush Ko Chang and the cluster of unspoilt, hardly-visited islands around Ko Kut. There are also a few busy border crossings with Cambodia in this area.
