Pulau Kei Kecil Travel Guide
The second largest and most populated of this island cluster known as the Kai Island group is Kai Kecil. The land in most part is flat and swampy and has been converted to land for farming.
On the east coast of the island are great beaches with relatively calm waters as it is sheltered by its bigger sister island of Kai Besar, and some say that these are the best beaches in the world, with a fine powdery texture to the sand.
The islands of the Kai group were all originally coral reefs that have pushed their way from the ocean floor and formed islands. You can see this in some areas where there are steep mountain cliffs dropping straight into the sea.
The island is still relatively untouched by western development, but there are places to stay along the beach with small bungalows that the local people have constructed to deal with the growing number of tourists coming to the island to dive around the coral reefs. Kite surfing and wind surfing are popular activities whilst on the island.
Kai Kecil is the best place to stay in the archipelago as it is the most geared to deal with tourists, with an airport and sea port. From here you can explore all that the Kai Islands have to offer. Laut Cave has some interesting drawings indicating that human life has long been on Kai Kecil.
Getting There & Away
The easiest way to travel to and from Kai Kecil is via Jakarta International Airport on a 3-hour flight to Ambon Island and then on to Tual Airport in Kai Kecil, which takes about 1 hour, 30 minutes. Tual also offers a deep water port for private yachts to moor.
