The mountainous terrain in the surrounding region is known for its treacherous landscape and has been nicknamed by the Nepalese traders negotiating the path between the two countries, The Gate of Hell. Nyalam city itself has an altitude of 12,300 feet and offers spectacular views of the Himalayans.

The town center is nothing special with only one main street with a few local shops and restaurants as well as a gas station. The surrounding area of Nyalam however is spectacularly beautiful with impressive mountains, fast flowing rivers and cascading waterfalls. The most famous attraction is Milarepa's Cave.

Travel to Nyalam - Getting There

Being located in the south of Shigatse County, there are limited transportation options available. Private cars and taxis can take you to Shigatse city, which is around 186 miles from Lhasa where there is an airport with flights throughout the region. Flights from Lhasa to Beijing take approximately 4 hours and leave daily. It is also possible to travel to the closer Nepalese city of Kathmandu.

· Milarepa's Cave
is situated just four miles north of Nyalam town and is where the famous 11th century Buddhist philosopher, Vajrayana Mahasiddha Milarepa lived most of his life. The cave is a popular attraction in the area with ancient artwork that was restored during the 1970s.

is located around 70 miles from Nyalam and is the capital city of Nepal. The journey from Nyalam to Kathmandu is particularly scenic with dramatic mountains and beautiful mountaintops.
