Namhsan Travel Guide

Namhsan is dusty town situated in Shan State, in northern Myanmar. The people of Namhsan wear distinctive golden belts, which gives the area the nickname ‘Golden Paalaung’.

Full of picturesque tea plantations, Namhsan is seated high on a hilly ridge scatted with dark teak houses. The people are warm and friendly and visitors will often be invited to sip a cup of steaming tea with the residents of the town and swap stories.

Trekking is the main activity in this area and there is plenty to discover. Climb to the top of the Payangyi hilltop to see a large Buddha image covered with gold and gems and explore the monastery here, and learn about the ancient art of tea making.

Getting There & Away

The most interesting way to get to Namhsan is by taking a bus from Mandalay to Pyin Oo Lwin (1 hour) and riding the train to Hsipaw (3 hours). Trucks run from Hsipaw to Namhsan (6 hours). The nearest international airport is at Mandalay.
