Mudanjiang Travel Guide

The cityscape of Mudanjiang is characterised by the encircling mountains and meandering River Peony, which divides the downtown area. Located in the southeast of Heilongjiang Province, the area is widely known for its dramatic scenery and natural wonders.

With close proximity to the Russian border and the popular winter holiday destination of Harbin, Mudanjiang enjoys a healthy tourist trade. Visitors flock to marvel at sights such as the underground forest, volcanic craters, waterfalls and ancient buildings. The harsh winter brings a thick blanket of snow, providing grounds for a range of leisure activities such as skiing, skating and horse-drawn sleighing.

Mudanjiang has a well-developed tourist infrastructure. Shuttle buses transport visitors between the main attractions and a selection of quality hotels provide comfortable accommodation. The nearby ocean allows the city a slightly more temperate climate than the rest of the province; however, the winter months still feel icy cold.

Getting There & Away

Daily flights between Mudanjiang and Beijing take 2 hours and flights to Shanghai depart three times per week, taking 2 hours, 45 minutes. An extensive rail network connects the city to Beijing, Tianjing, Jixi and Shenyang, with two lines of internal trains providing fast, convenient access to Harbin.
