Bordered by Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, the southern portion of the country has many attractions to offer. The geography is quite varied - wide swathes of coffee plantations bordered by the rugged Annamite mountains in the east and lowland plains in the west. The mighty Mekong river has a huge estuary-like pool near on the Cambodian border where the endangered Irrawaddy dolphins make their home.
The northern part of the south doesn't get a lot of tourists traipsing around, and those that are are usually on their way north or south, or into Vietnam or Thailand. This provides a nice opportunity for those who want to explore without the crowds and without going to the far corners of the country. The vast Mekong delta provides a huge area to explore while gently sloping hills go east toward the infamous Ho Chi Minh trail.
