For many visitors to Myanmar, Kayin State will be their first port of call as they cross the Friendship Bridge from the town of Mae Sai in Thailand.

the Kayin people are also know as Ooze, which refers to their skills of elephant training.

Hpa-an is the capital of Kayin State and there are a good number of tourist attractions in and around this area as well as several places to stay and good restaurants. The pretty Thanlwin River runs through Kayin State and walking along the riverbank is a good way to relax.

Covering an area of 30,000-plus square kilometers, Kayin State is a good place for hiking and there are a number of areas of natural beauty to explore such as high hills, caves and sparkling waterfalls.

Travel to Kayin State - Getting There

Visitors to Kayin State can walk across the Friendship Bridge, which connects with Mae Sai, Thailand. There are also regular flights from Yangon to the state capital of Hpa-an (2 hours). Buses connect Hpa-an with other cities in Myanmar but foreigners are prohibited from using these services.
