Hua Phan Province Travel Guide

Bordering Vietnam, Houaphan province is one of the poorest and least visited areas of Laos though it has a wealth of natural resources and interesting attractions to offer.

The capital of the province is Sam Neua (Xam Neua), easily accessed through its airport. It provides travelers with many guesthouses, and attractions here include a visit to the riverside market and to Wat Pho Xai, a quiet temple in the heart of the town.

Highlights of the province include the Viengxay caves, the Hintang archeological park and its mysterious standing stones, and the Nam Sam National Biodiversity Conservation Area. Houaphan is also famous for its silk and cotton weavings, part of its traditional activities.

Sam Neua Airport has daily connections with Vientiane, and the province is easily accessed by bus, even from Vietnam.
