Golmud Travel Guide

Golmud is the second largest and second most important city in Qinghai Province, after Xining. It is located on the Mongolian border and is a popular stop for those looking to cross into Mongolia.

Once part of Tibet, the city is now a mining and industrial town which is home to a large community of Han Chinese. It is small and therefore easy to navigate but its size and lack of development mean that tourist facilities are very limited. Most of the residents unable to speak English, so getting by here can be tricky.

There is a small selection of hotels located near the train station, but these are generally very basic and not the cleanest of accommodation options. For something slightly nicer, the main street in the center is home to some cheap options.

There are very few attractions in Golmud, but the natural beauty makes up for this. It is not a place for people who bore easily and is really only useful as a stopover before entering Tibet.

Getting There & Away

Golmud has its own small domestic airport which serves Xining and Xian (both of which are international airports). Flights go to Golmud from Xining (2 hours) and Xian (3 hours). There is also a local bus making the journey between Xining and Golmud (18 hours) but most people prefer to fly. Once you are in the city, you will need a permit to travel outside of it. These are very cheap and easily arranged at the train and bus stations; without one you will not be able to travel by train, plane or bus.
