Garut was known as the Switzerland of Java during colonial times.

Garut was once a prominent hill station during colonial times, when European visitors would flock to the village to retreat from Indonesia's heat during the scorching summer months. This is still a pretty place to relax for a few days, and the cool climate is perfect for hiking and trekking.

Garut is also a popular place for shopaholics as there are plenty of souvenir and gift shops. However, the view across the region is the main attraction here and many visitors choose to stay in accommodation with large balconies, so that they can make the most of it.
