Southern Cambodia Travel Guide

The southern area of Cambodia is a mountainous region, with only a few routes that travelers can use to go over or around the Cardemom and Elephant ranges. However, once you’re on the other side, you have in front of you some beautiful beaches and a generally lower number of tourists and western influences. Highlights are the fishing villages that dot the seaboard, the coastal city of Sihanoukville and numerous deserted and relatively unexplored islands and beaches.

The Koh Kong province has mountains, dense forests, and a long, undeveloped coastline on the Gulf of Thailand. This is an area that Cambodia is trying to build up as a coastal resort such as those in Thailand. It is a popular border crossing from Thailand, reachable by boat and soon by a land bridge. The coastal city of Sihanoukville is a popular stop for beach lovers.

The best time to visit Cambodia is during the winter from November to January, when temperatures are mild. This is also the high season and pre-booking for hotels and airlines may be necessary. Avoiding the hottest month of April is a good idea, because temperatures easily reach 40°C.
