Brunei’s steamy climate is typical of other equatorial regions, with humid balmy temperatures and consistent rainfall throughout most of the year. Annual monsoon winds create the only variation in Brunei’s climate. A northeast monsoon covers the country from December through March, and a southeast monsoon blows from June through October. During these rainy spells, heavy showers mean significant amounts of precipitation. The wettest months are December and January, making this one of the least favorable times to visit despite the holiday season.
The little amount of variation between the wet and dry seasons ensures Brunei has reliably humid air all year round. Average humidity levels hover at around 80 percent, while average daytime temperatures stay near or above 84°F. Of course, the high humidity makes conditions much stickier and more uncomfortable than the temperature suggest.
There are two windows between the monsoons which provide a marked drop in precipitation. Between April and May, and November to early December, conditions are at their driest. This is a popular time to visit Brunei, though the temperatures in March and April are at their peak. Lightweight clothes and a good rain jacket are essential items of clothing to keep comfortable in this steamy tropical country at any time of year.
