All visitors to Brunei need to have and onward flight ticket as well as hold a valid passport and have sufficient funds for their journey.
Visitors to Brunei from countries such as the United Kingdom, Austria, Germany, Ireland, Malaysia, New Zealand, Oman, Singapore, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates are allowed to visit for up to 30 days without a visa, while Australian citizens are granted a 30-day visa upon arrival.
Visitors from Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Maldives, the Netherlands, Norway, Peru, the Philippines, Poland, the Slovak Republic, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand and Ukraine can stay in Brunei for up to 14 days with no visa.
However, citizens of the USA are allowed to visit Brunei for up to 90 days without a visa. Visitors from countries not listed above need to obtain visas from any Brunei Darussalam diplomatic mission before arrival in Brunei.
Brunei is located near Sabah and Sarawak, Malaysia and it is possible to get a boat from either of these two places to Muara Ferry Terminal, which is located 25kms northeast of the capital city of Bandar Seri Begawan.
The main overland route to Brunei is from Miri in Sarawak and visitors from Sarawak can travel to Kuala Belait in Brunei by bus or taxi.
Sabah: there are regular boats to Brunei from Pulau Lubuan in Sabah. Those traveling overland can take a bus from Kota Kinabalu, although this journey is quite time consuming and can be rather awkward as buses are irregular.
Sarawak: the easiest way to reach Brunei is from the city of Miri and there are plenty of direct buses to make the journey smooth and simple, while those with plenty of cash to spare may prefer to take a taxi. There are also a few buses to Brunei from the towns of Limbang and Lawas in Sarawak.
