Travel to Bandar Seri Begawan - Getting There

Bandar Seri Begawan is Brunei’s capital city and is connected to the rest of the country by plane, road and water. Planes arrive at the city’s international airport from a number of global destinations, and this is a good port of entry to Brunei.

Being the capital city, Bandar Seri Begawan is well connected to the rest of Brunei by road and buses arrive regularly from all over the country and beyond. Traveling by bus is cheap and comfortable, and those on a budget will find that this is the best way to arrive in the city from other parts of Brunei, while most international visitors choose to fly.

Hiring a car is quite reasonably priced in Brunei and the good quality of the roads in the city plus relatively low volume of traffic make this a good way to get into Bandar Seri Begawan, while boats also arrive at several of the city’s ports from a number of different locations.

Arrive by Air

Brunei International Airport is the country’s main airport, receiving daily flights from destinations such as London, Dubai, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu. Flights are provided by leading airlines such as British Airways, Qantas, Thai Airways, Malaysia Airlines and Singapore Airlines.

It takes about 20 minutes to reach the city center from the airport. There are plenty of taxis waiting to take passengers wherever they want to go and the fare usually costs around US$15. It is also possible to take a purple bus to the city center from the terminal for just US$0.66.

Arrive by Bus

Bandar Seri Begawan’s main bus terminal for long distance buses is at Jalan Cator, which is in the center of the city. Buses arrive here from all over Brunei as well as parts of Sarawak. Traveling by bus is very cheap and buses are quite comfortable, often featuring toilets onboard.

Most visitors to Bandar Seri Begawan arrive from places such as Miri (two hours), Kuala Belait (30 minutes) and Seria. It is possible to enter Brunei from Sarawak by bus, changing at Seria and again at Kuala Belait.

Arrive by Boat

Traveling to Bandar Seri Begawan by boat is a convenient and scenic option which serves as a great way to see the city for the first time. The ferry terminal is located roughly northeast of the city and it is possible to catch an express bus from the city center to the terminal.

Ferries arrive at the terminal from a number of destinations. Bandar Seri Begawan is perhaps best reached from Lawas in Sarawak (two hours), Puala Labuan (one hour) and various locations in Sabah. Another exciting journey is the speedboat trip between the Bandar Seri Begawan and Bangar, which takes just 45 minutes.
